Spoken Word: Sucked In…

With all the glam, gloss and puff,
Can’t help but think…
All this luxury of fine wining, dining, jet setting, uninhibited indulgence,
Heightened emotions and pleasure musings that numb and blind.
Distractions galore and one-hit wonders make people forget–
To pause, to think, to feel and ponder, “That’s it?”
Bombarded and clobbered by the desire
To be sexy-cool, hip, fun and fresh.
It leaves little time to notice empty soul pits that gnaw the conscience between breaths.
In the end, my spirit: dry.
Pseudo happiness masked by momentary, exaggerated spurts of excitement,
Trapped in an external showcase, triggered by shiny novelties.
These are the hustled beats of life, in need of a fermata.
I make my own decisions, unconscious of rippling effects and consequences of my thoughts, my actions…
Until another slamming or high-flying moment passes and I begin to realize, to recognize,
There’s more.
